Activate Session command failed from IPMI command

ilom2Recently one of my customers has tried to add Infiniband Switch as Asset in the Exalogic Control BUI. He finaly have troubels with the IPMI connection to the Infiniband Switches from the Exadata Stack.

Trying to access the Infiniband Switches results in a „Unable to establish LAN session“ error

[root@dm01dbadm01 ~]# ipmitool -v sel  -H <IB_HOST> -U ilom-admin  -P <PASSWORD>
Activate Session command failed
Error: Unable to establish LAN session
Get SEL Info command failed

The problem here is, that the reals error is not showing. The Infiniband Switch has no Problems when connection as root or ilom-admin User over HTTP but the error can be a sympthom that you did not set a password (or the wrong password) when using IPMI. The solution is very simple. Try to reset the password of the ilom-admin user. If all wents successfull your IPMI Command should return a output similar to this.

[root@dm01dbadm01 ~]# ipmitool -v sel  -H <IB_HOST> -U ilom-admin  -P <PASSWORD>

I found a BUG on MOS which also describe this Problem in conjunction with Oracle Cloud Control. This error can also occur on non Exadata Plattform.

Bug 14136908 : NEED BETTER ERROR HANDLING FOR ILOM USER PWD INSTEAD OF UNABLE TO ESTABLISH IPMI
